Build a Little Gift Cupboard—Without Buying Too Much
Keep a few thoughtful presents ready for birthdays and holidays, with a person and a purpose for every purchase.

Take inventory before shopping
Gather gifts you have already bought and write down what each one is, who it is for and where you stored it. Include gift bags and wrapping supplies. Finding an unused present in a closet is more useful than buying another one because it is on sale.
Give every new gift a destination
Before putting a bargain in your basket, name its recipient and occasion. Would that person genuinely enjoy it? Does it fit the limit you set? If you cannot answer both questions, leave it behind.
Keep the collection small enough to see at a glance. A gift cupboard is a place for planned presents, not a stockpile of discounts.
Be careful with time-sensitive gifts
Check best-before dates for food and care instructions for anything that needs special storage. For children's gifts, consider whether interests and sizes may change before the occasion. Read return windows before buying far ahead, and keep receipts somewhere you can find them.
Use the calendar to shop with purpose
Review the next few birthdays and celebrations each month. Match what you already own to those dates before looking for something new. Keep surprise gifts out of shared lists if the recipient can see them.
When the occasion arrives, mark the gift as given and update your inventory. The goal is fewer last-minute purchases and more thoughtful choices—not a fuller cupboard.
